A Birmingham moving checklist you can actually use.
Use the timeline as a starting point. Your lease, closing documents, county, city, and state agencies control the details that apply to you.

Put one owner and one date beside each task.
30–60 days before
Choose your move date, confirm housing, collect the documents you will need, and write down the route and services that matter. If you are still deciding between cities, take a research trip and score each candidate using the same questions.
- Confirm lease, closing, or temporary-housing terms.
- Build a moving budget that includes deposits, utilities, insurance, and travel.
- Map work, school, healthcare, family, airport, and grocery destinations.
- Ask about utilities, internet, parking, pets, and move-in conditions.
The week of the move
Keep essential documents, medications, chargers, keys, and confirmation numbers together. Photograph move-in condition for a rental and record the utility transfer details.
- Confirm movers, access instructions, and delivery windows.
- Start or transfer utilities that apply to the address.
- Save the nearest grocery, pharmacy, urgent-care, and fuel options.
- Check official ALEA and Alabama Department of Revenue requirements.
First 30 days after arrival
Use the first month to test the routine and close the paperwork loop. Deadlines vary by situation, so confirm directly with official agencies rather than relying on a generic checklist.
- Complete the applicable Alabama license and vehicle steps.
- Update employer, school, insurance, financial, and subscription addresses.
- Track what you like and dislike about the route and home.
- If buying later, take those notes to a licensed local professional.
- ALEA driver license information
- Alabama vehicle registration
- Your city and county offices
- Your utility provider
- Your school or employer
